International Association of Museums of History Association internationale des musées d'histoire

The International Association of Museums of History, first founded in Paris in 1991, works in liaison with the International Council of Museums (ICOM) as an Affiliated Organisation to foster work and ideas of relevance to history museums. It was created upon the following statement: there was no clear definition of the history museum: it is more defined with respect to what it is not (an art museum for instance) than what it is. Thus the association has always been striving since the beginning to organize discussions with this type of museum which characteristics is to have historic collections. Finally, the association works on three levels: France, Europe, and World.

Créée en 1991, l'Association internationale des musées d'histoire travaille, en liaison notamment avec l'ICOM (International Council of Museums) en tant qu'Organisation affiliée, à susciter des réflexions sur les musées d'histoire. Sa création est partie d'un constat : il n'existait pas de définition claire du musée d'histoire : ce dernier se définit davantage par rapport à ce qu'il n'est pas (un musée de beaux-arts par exemple) que de façon positive. Ainsi, depuis ses débuts, l'AIMH mène des discussions au sein de ce type de musée dont la principale spécificité est d'avoir des collections à caractère historique polyvalentes (d'art, de science et d'ethnologie aussi). Elle développe ses travaux sur trois niveaux : France, Europe, monde.
